Lakeview Students Using Kindles

Posted
Students at Lakeview Middle School are experiencing a new way to read books.

With funds provided through a KEYS Grant written by Brenda Linky, six Kindle devices were purchased primarily for students with reading disabilities, but they have been used by all students.

Many people are unaware that the Kindle has a text-to-speech component which allows the user to read and also listen to a book. Recently, students in Mrs. Engelberth’s seventh-grade language arts class used the Kindles during sustained silent reading.

Students are excited to use the Kindles and are able to read books at their grade level that might otherwise be too difficult.

When Alexa Balestri was asked what she liked about using the Kindle, she said, “They help me improve my reading because I can see the words while I listen to the story.”
