Editor, Times-Union: My name is Cailin Clay. I have just read Dollie Bumgardner’s article on Lakeview’s dress code.
I also attend Lakeview Middle School and I would like to bring up another topic about Lakeview: school lunches and the healthiness of Lakeview’s snack shop.
We all know lately the economics have been low. I went to purchase my lunch one day and the cashier told me I had no money and I was not able to have my school lunch. The only way I would be able to eat was if someone else paid for my lunch. I did not want to have someone do that, but I did not want to not have the energy to learn for the remaining of the day.
I see students everyday going back to their lunch table without a lunch. My mother has recently told me that the lunch ladies used to give a PB&J sandwich or something the student could eat when you had no money to purchase the school lunch. I know for a fact Lakeview is getting more money from school lunches with selling salads and cookies and chips over at the snack shop. So why don’t we have a substitution for the school lunch?
Which brings me to my next topic. The school is trying to be more healthy, for example switching to wheat buns instead of white. Yet the school still sells fattening chips and cookies. Why is the school trying to promote healthiness when they still sell these highly fattening foods? Yes, they’re for energy throughout the day, but students should not be able to have the access to that food everyday.
