Lakeview B-Team

Editor, Times-Union:

On Sept. 20, I attended a Lakeview Middle School "B"-team football game. I was, to say the least, very disappointed in the coaches and several "A" players for the school.

My child is a member of the "B" team, along with several other students. And I, along with several other parents, appreciate the fact that the "B" team got to start and play in a game. But, the coaches and "A" team seemed to think that since the "starting team" wasn't playing, that it was OK for them not to suit up, act as if the game was not as important to them as it was to the "B" team nor give the B team the same support during a game that they themselves receive when playing. While on the sidelines watching, they were more interested in having water fights, playing with a tennis ball and acting as if they were golfing.

The "B" team that they chose to show their lack of support and disrespect to is on that field every game, every practice suited up, paying attention, cheering them when good plays are made, offering moral support when they are down and out, and showing their support with most of them knowing that they will not in all likelihood be able to play in the game. They do this week after week without complaining, just being happy to be part of the team. But when the A team, having a chance to offer the others, who may not be as good as them the same respect and team spirit, it wasn't returned.

In saying that, I do realize that boys will be boy, especially teenage boys. And had they been made to suit up, I don't believe it would've been that way, because the uniform itself brings on a feeling of honor and duty.

I would like to say, thank You to the coaches, as well though, for taking the time out of their personal lives to coach, teacher and mentor both A and B teams. I'm sure at times it's very much an inconvenience to them, but they do it regardless of thinking of themselves.
