Lakeland Art Gallery Reopening With Exhibit

Posted
Lakeland Art Gallery will reopen for the season Wednesday with an exhibit.

It will feature a collection of art works by early area artists including Fred Olds, Allee Gerard and Theodore Good. These pieces are on loan from area private collectors and represent some of the finest early artists from this area. The display will be featured in the Gallery through March 26.

Olds was a man of many facets ... teacher, artist, lecturer among other things. His first teaching job in 1945 was at Long Island High School where he came to understand he'd found his career. In 1950 he returned to Indiana to reach art and coach football and track; in 1957 he founded Lakeland Art Association.

Gerard wanted to be known as a painter of the county's lakes and streams, and in the early days she used an old plate for a pallet and the bottom of an old ironing board for an easel. Her first one-man show was in November 1943 at the Warsaw Hotel Hays and featured 64 of her landscape and still-life paintings.

Etna Green's Good studied old master artists extensively throughout his life as an artist. He painted from memory, creating mostly landscapes and floral still-life pieces. In addition, Lakeland Art Association members' contemporary works will also be on display and available for sale.

Lakeland Art Gallery is at 107 N. First St., Pierceton, and is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Lakeland Art Association's website is www.lakelandartassociation.org and on Facebook as Lakeland Art Association. The Gallery's phone number is 574-594-9950.
