Lady Warriors Lead Roundup With Volleyball Championship

SYRACUSE — The Wawasee volleyball team won its own invitational Saturday, with Tippecanoe Valley going 2-2. For Wawasee, it reached the championship match by defeating Whitko (25-17, 25-13), Culver (25-9, 25-15) and Bethany Christian (25-16, 25-21). In the title match, the Wawasee Lady Warriors had their first three-game match, winning it over Garrett 25-18, 21-25, 15-12. On the day, Wawasee was led by Meghan Fretz’s 26 kills, Alli Ousley’s 57 assists, Aly Anderson’s 65 digs, Liz Hardy’s 7.5 blocks and Grace Ondrla’s six aces. With her performance, Ousley was named to the all-tournament team, as was Tippecanoe Valley’s Caylie Teel, Garrett’s Taylor Smith, Bethany’s Darienne Maust and Columbia City’s Avery Sparks and Bayley Smith. For Valley, it defeated Whitko (25-21, 30-28) and Wabash (25-15, 23-25, 15-11), but fell to Columbia City (25-14, 13-25, 18-16) and Garrett (26-24, 25-23). Teel led the Lady Vikings with 33 kills, while Jaden Biddle was Valley’s leader in digs with 44 and Maddy Henninger recorded a team-high 32 assists. Wawasee (12-9) hosts a ‘Pink Out’ match Thursday against Warsaw and Valley’s (14-7) next match is also Thursday, as it travels to Northfield. Saturday in Michigan City Getting through the likes of Class 3A No. 2 Fort Wayne Concordia and Class 4A No. 17 Valparaiso, the Warsaw volleyball team won Saturday’s Michigan City Invitational. Going 3-1 on the day, Warsaw lost to Northern Lakes Conference foe Concord, but went on to defeat fellow NLC member Plymouth in the championship match. Warsaw’s Katie Voelz was named the tournament MVP, with teammates Cassie Hoag and Jordyn Lindeman making the all-tournament team. The 16-4 Lady Tigers travel to Wawasee for a ‘Pink Out’ match Thursday.
Saturday in Leo At Saturday’s Leo Invitational, the Manchester volleyball team went 0-4. Playing without some girls for personal reasons or injuries, the Lady Squires lost to DeKalb (25-16, 25-27, 15-10), Angola (25-21, 28-26), Central Noble (25-20, 25-14) and West Noble (25-23, 12-25, 16-14). The 7-16 Manchester team will be at Class 3A No. 7 Rochester tonight. DEKALB DEF. Boys Cross Country Saturday in Ligonier The Whitko boys cross country team was 16th and Manchester placed 18th at Saturday’s West Noble Invitational. West Noble was the top team at the meet, winning with 84 points, followed by Frot Wayne Dwenger (120) and Fort Wayne Northrop (137) in second and third, respectively. Manchester’s Matthew Fahs-Brown placed 10th in 17:12 and Whitko’s best finish was 54th, accomplished by Josh Wright in 18:26. Girls Cross Country Saturday in Ligonier At Saturday’s West Noble Invitational, the Homestead girls cross country team finished first with 84 points, while Whitko was 16th (420) and Manchester placed 18th (484). DeKalb’s Tyler Schwartz was the overall top runner, winning in 19:02. Whitko’s top finish was Brigit Nemitz’s 41st (21:54) and Manchester was paced by Kaitlyn Blum’s 104th-place finish (23:51). Girls Golf Saturday in Huntington The Manchester girls golf team finished just outside of qualifying for regionals, but did have an individual move on in the tournament. Southwood won Saturday’s Huntington North Sectional at LaFontaine Golf Club with a 365, followed by Huntington North’s 383 and Oak Hill’s 396, while Manchester’s 406 was good for fourth place, just one outside of advancing to the East Noble Regional. Along with the top three teams moving on to regionals, the top three individuals without a qualifying team do as well, and Manchester’s Claire Barnett was second in that category with an 88. Boys Soccer Saturday in Syracuse At home against East Noble Saturday, the Wawasee boys soccer team recorded its fourth draw of the season, 1-1. The first score of the contest came off the foot of Wawasee’s Austin Shrack in the 60th minute, but East Noble scored 10 minutes later, resulting in the draw. The 4-2-4 Warriors are at Class 2A No. 15 Goshen for a Northern Lakes Conference match Tuesday. WAWASEE 1, EAST NOBLE 1 Wawasee Stats: Goal – Austin Shrack; Assist – Ricky Camargo. Saturday in South Whitley The Whitko boys soccer team dealt North Miami a 5-1 loss Saturday in South Whitley. Keegan Hicks and Daniel Kirkham had a hat trick with three goals in the victory and Keegan Hicks supplied the other two. Up next for Whitko is Wednesday’s contest at Eastbrook. Girls Soccer Saturday in South Whitley Getting two goals each from Heather Bryan and Reghan Craig Saturday, the Whitko girls soccer team got a 5-1 home win over North Miami. Leighandra Goodman also scored for Whitko, which improved to 2-7-1 with the win. The Lady Wildcats are at Garrett today. Boys Tennis Saturday in Merrillville The Triton boys tennis team finished sixth at Saturday’s Merrillville Invitational, followed by Wawasee in seventh. Bethany Christian won the tournament with 45 points, while Triton had 21 and Wawasee picked up 17.
