HAMLET – Senior Emma Bohnenkamper was a standout on Warsaw’s girls cross country squad.
Junior Kacy Bragg is a standout on the Lady Tigers’ volleyball team.
Both were in full basketball mode Thursday night, as they combined for 31 points and 16 rebounds in the Lady Tigers’ 63-46 win at Oregon-Davis.
Helping their team improve to 5-2 on the season, Bohnenkamper scored a game high 17 points and pulled down six rebounds, while Bragg tallied a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards.
“Emma continues to improve every game,” said Warsaw coach Lenny Krebs. “She got a little later start than everyone else because of the cross country team’s success. She’s just now getting her basketball legs underneath her, she’s starting to get into basketball shape. You’re starting to see the result of that. At the same time, she’s starting to become much more confident. Confidence has an amazing way of breeding success, and that’s what you’re seeing right now with Emma.
“Kacy continues to be a force on the glass, as well as with points. I thought both those girls played extremely well.
“I thought Kennedy (Patton) came off the bench and provided some big minutes. She played 19 minutes and gave us seven points ... she was that spark off the bench we were looking for. Great job for her. Hopefully we can continue to get that confidence up and improve.”
Sophomore Brielle Harrison tallied eight points and six boards in the win, while junior Maddie Ryman chipped in with seven points, five rebounds and two steals, and senior Kennedy Patton added seven points, three rebounds and four steals.
The Lady Tigers, who shot 44 percent from the field overall while holding Oregon-Davis to 32 percent, led 7-2 early and grew their advantage gradually throughout the game.
Warsaw led 15-10 after one quarter of play, 29-19 at halftime and 44-27 at the end of the third quarter.
Thursday’s game was the Lady Tigers’ first action since a Nov. 21 loss to Penn, and Warsaw rebounded in a big way – literally.
Warsaw outrebounded the Lady Bobcats 40-27, including a 19-10 advantage on the offensive glass.
“We were able to bother them a little bit with our length, and some size,” said Krebs. “We had 19 offensive rebounds, that takes its toll after a while.
“For us, we just have to do a little better job making sure we convert on those second-chance points. We only had 17 second-chance points on 19 offensive rebounds ... we’ve got to be a little more effective once we get those offensive rebounds.”
For the Lady Bobcats, whose record dropped to 2-3, freshman Mercedes Rhodes led the way with 12 points and five rebounds.
Senior Kandis Sauer and sophomore Jayden Worthington finished with 11 points each.
Warsaw is in action again Saturday with an afternoon home game against Portage. The JV game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
