After giving up a total of just two goals in the first five games of the season, Warsaw’s varsity girls soccer team found itself trailing Homestead 2-0 at halftime Thursday. The Lady Tigers responded with a big second half on their home pitch, however, as they rallied for a thrilling 3-2 win over the Spartans. Anna Grill scored Warsaw’s first goal on an assist from Elizabeth Van Wormer in the 52nd minute. Van Wormer then netted a goal of her own in the 65th minute, tying the match on an assist by Dayle Harvey. With six minutes remaining in the 80-minute match, Breck Jackson scored an unassisted goal, capping the comeback. “Tonight, the Lady Tigers almost lost,” said Warsaw coach Peter Lucht via email. “We were two goals down after a nicely taken finish in the upper 90 and a goal following a corner kick. Homestead had an energy and intensity that clearly demonstrated they wanted to win tonight. “Things changed dramatically at halftime. The Lady Tigers demonstrated character, resolve and heart. I am very proud of them for pushing hard to get back into the game, and very grateful to God for the result.” With the win, the Lady Tigers are now 6-0 on the season. Warsaw has outscored its six opponents 28-4. The Lady Tigers are in action again Saturday at Argos.
