An early goal and a dominant second half helped the Warsaw Lady Tigers extend their win streak Monday night. Hosting the Fort Wayne Snider Lady Panthers in high school soccer action, Warsaw’s Brenna Buhrt scored on an assist by Dayle Harvey in the first minute, as the Lady Tigers pushed their win streak to nine games with a 6-1 victory. The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime before the Lady Tigers exploded for five goals in the second half. “You couldn’t dream up a better start than scoring a goal in the first minute,” said Warsaw coach Peter Lucht, whose team improved to 11-3 on the season. “That said, with the way that we played in the first half, we should have walked into halftime with a good margin. It is a good life lesson that it only takes one opportunity, and your opponent can find themselves back in the game. I am proud of the way the girls focused on their finishing touches in the second half, and we are certainly going to prioritize finishing this week in practice.” Snider scored its lone goal on a free kick that was headed into the upper 90. The Lady Tigers took control of the game in the first 11 minutes after the intermission with a goal by Sydney Wiedeman in the 45th minute, followed by goals from Buhrt in the 49th and 51st minutes. Wiedeman stretched Warsaw’s advantage to 5-1 in the 68th minute, and Julie Frazzetta capped off the offensive surge with a goal in the 70th minute. Delaney Taylor had two assists in the win, while Abby Steffensmeier, Frazzetta, Harvey and Buhrt had one each. “There are several names that need mentioned for recognition,” said Lucht. “First, Breck Jackson led the defense in really limiting Snider’s opportunities. Second, Julie Frazzetta had a nice evening, winning balls and providing a goal and an assist. Third, Sydney Wiedeman was a dangerous threat on the wing, putting in two goals on the evening. Fourth, Delaney Taylor really made her mark in the game. She was a constant engine and really connected well with her teammates in the second half, evidenced in part by her two assists. “And finally, Brenna Buhrt. Ball winner. Good distribution. Three goals and an assist. Enough said.” The Lady Tigers have three games left before the start of the state tournament. Warsaw, 5-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference, is in action again Saturday when it hosts league foe Wawasee for a girls/boys doubleheader. The Lady Tigers host Argos on Sept. 27, followed by the regular season finale at Northridge two days later. Warsaw hosts the sectional, which is slated to begin on Oct. 4.
