MANCHESTER – In four of Manchester’s five tennis matches with Wawasee, Lady Squire tennis players lost just 11 games in four straight set wins. The fifth match was more difficult, but still went Manchester’s way to complete the 5-0 sweep of the Lady Warriors Thursday evening. Karly Eichenauer and Leiah Brandenburg had little trouble at No. 1 doubles as they didn't drop a game. "These two sophomores like to play power tennis, and that is what they did with tough serving, hard returns, and aggressive net volleys. They were fun to watch tonight," said Manchester head coach Joel Eichenauer via e-mail. Marret Metzger won comfortably at No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Chelsea Carolus. "Marret, as a newcomer to tennis, just keeps improving," Eichenauer said. Allison Smith at No. 1 singles had a competitive opening set with the Lady Warriors’ Jada Antonides before wrapping up the win with a shutout in the second set. "Allison closed out well and then kept focused at the start of the next set,” Eichenauer said. “We have worked on seizing momentum and running with it, and Allison did just that tonight." Claire Barnett clinched the team victory number four with her strong play at No. 2 singles, defeating Thanatcha Thanasrivanitchai 6-1, 6-3. "Claire rushed out to a big lead and had to battle a challenging opponent to capture an early-on close set two," Eichenauer said. Meanwhile, the No. 2 doubles team of Morgan McKee and Bethany Collett were experiencing the ups and downs of a long match with Wawasee’s Jazlyn Gehlhausen and Kabrea Rostochak. It was the only match that went three sets. "Morgan got the duo started off right, but they stalled out up 4-3 in the second set. They made too many foolish errors,” Eichenauer said. “I was impressed, though, by the way we opened up the final set with confidence and maintained the intensity.” The Lady Squires now sport a 4-2 record on the season. They will travel to the Muncie Central Invitational on Saturday, then resume Three Rovers Conference play on Monday when they travel to Rochester and take on the Zebras. Wawasee falls to 1-5 on the season, and will take on Northern Lakes Conference foe Northridge on Tuesday in Middlebury. MANCHESTER 5 WAWASEE 0 Singles – No. 1: Allison Smith (M) def.
