For Warsaw’s varsity girls soccer team, the outcome of Thursday evening’s season opener was as beautiful as the weather. Playing in perfect conditions after their original opener Monday at Carroll was postponed because of inclement weather, the Lady Tigers dominated Manchester from start to finish en route to a 10-0 win over the Lady Squires. It took the hosts all of four minutes to get on the scoreboard, as they netted five goals in each half and saw seven different players score, while six players were credited with an assist. “On paper, we knew that we were strong coming into the season, so it was nice to get the first game under our belt,” said Warsaw coach Peter Lucht. “We had a game scheduled Monday, but it got stormed out ... literally while we were doing the National Anthem, lightning comes down, so we didn’t get to play Carroll. It was good to finally get a game in, the girls were itching to play, for sure.” Thursday, Warsaw proved to be the storm Manchester couldn’t handle, and lightning struck early and often. Senior Elizabeth VanWormer scored in the fourth minute off an assist from freshman Anna Grill. After the Lady Tigers took a 2-0 lead on an own goal in the 12th minute, they pushed their advantage to 3-0 with freshman Anna Sullivan’s unassisted goal a minute later. VanWormer scored on an assist from Sullivan in the 28th minute, and then freshman Anna Reimink converted a penalty kick in the 36th minute, giving Warsaw a 5-0 lead at halftime. “Manchester actually came out a little stronger than I think that they were last year ... and I know scoreline at the end ... but they actually came out stronger than they were last year,” said Lucht. “Credit to them, for that. But, we had some patience, and you put a few in, the possession is there, that becomes a long battle mentally. Our girls were able to move the ball well and finish their opportunities.” Kennedy Patton scored twice for the Lady Tigers in the second half, while sophomore Brenna Shipley, sophomore Sydney Wiedeman and senior Greer Smith netted one goal each. “Manchester played a high line,” said Lucht. “That’s not something we’re used to with our speed. Only a few teams have done that. Our overlapping, I love it ... it’s great to go around defenses, rather than going through it.” Chloe Smith and Jessica Keyes made one save each while in goal for the Lady Tigers. Sophomore Kiera Stacy made 12 saves for Manchester, as Warsaw put pressure on her from the get-go. Warsaw (1-0) is in action again Saturday in the Bishop Luers Invitational, while Manchester travels to Wawasee Tuesday.
