Lady Lancers Enjoy Offensive ExplosionWINONA LAKE – Grace College’s women’s basketball team enjoyed an offensive explosion, beating Great Lakes Christian 110-50 on Friday night.

The Lady Lancers (4-4) scored the second-most points in program history, missing the team record by just one point.

Friday’s game was part of a two-day home tournament known as the Carol Forbes Classic. The tournament, which coincides with the men’s tournament, helps raise funds for local cancer care in Kosciusko County.

Grace drilled a season-high 15 three-pointers on the night, and all 13 healthy players registered at least one point in the scoring column.

Grace pressed the Crusaders from the opening tip, and the tactic immediately paid off. GLCC committed nine turnovers in the first quarter, leading to 12 points off those miscues for Grace.

The Lady Lancers led by eight at the quarter’s end. Brooke Sugg ripped off seven points in the period, and Lauren Godfrey buried a pair of treys.

Sugg and Brielle Wilson opened the second quarter with back-to-back triples, and Grace’s lead quickly ballooned. An 11-0 run early in the period put Grace on top 37-17 after consecutive baskets from Kaylie Warble.

Sugg made a splash at the end of the half, hitting a three-pointer with 1:04 left and then beating the buzzer with a putback hoop. Her last-second shot gave Grace a 51-24 lead at halftime.

Grace began to wear down the Crusaders in the second half. GLCC surrendered 33 points in the third quarter alone, despite Grace substituting liberally after halftime.

Olivia Pearson buried a three-pointer with a minute left in the third quarter, which gave the Lady Lancers a 50-point lead at 84-34.

Grace’s starters did not play the fourth quarter; nearly every Lady Lancer saw 10 minutes of action in the contest.

Sugg tied for scoring honors with 20 points, adding five assists and a career-high eight steals.

Pearson had a season-best 14 points and five boards, 3 of 4 attempts from the arc.

Warble finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, Godfrey added 11 points with a trio of treys, and Stull added eight points and three assists.

Melissa Goss registered seven points in 11 minutes, Pam Miller added six points, five boards and four assists, and Wilson had eight points, four assists and four rebounds.

For the game, Grace had 31 assists on 43 made field goals. The Lady Lancers also had 22 steals and scored 48 points off turnovers.

The Lady Lancers end the Carol Forbes Classic today, hosting Silver Lake College at 2 p.m.

Oghenehoke Johnson led GLCC with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Kerlanda Dervil added 15 points and eight boards.
