NORTH MANCHESTER - Thousands of breastfeeding families, their supporters and healthcare providers around the world will participate in the eighth annual La Leche League International "World Walk for Breastfeeding" during world breastfeeding week, Aug. 1-7.

Locally, the La Leche League of North Manchester will join the world walk at 2 p.m. Saturday at Warvel Park, Seventh and Market streets in North Manchester. Registration and a petting zoo begin at 1 p.m.

Aug. 1 marks the eighth anniversary of the signing of the Innocenti Declaration on the Protection, Promotion and Support of Breastfeeding, which was developed and adopted by 32 governments and 10 United Nations agencies.

Walkers will be promoting the La Leche League goal of increasing the incidence and duration of breastfeeding worldwide. The walks are expected to raise more than $130,000 and raise community awareness of the importance of breastfeeding for the children of the world.
