MILFORD – State Rep. Rebecca Kubacki recognized Indiana State Police Trooper Kyle Dukes Monday for his efforts to memorialize a World War II veteran and Medal of Honor recipient from Milford. Kubacki said Dukes approached her about putting signs at the edge of town recognizing WWII veteran Harry J. Michael, who was born in Milford in 1922. Michael was posthumously awarded the medal in 1946, a year after the second lieutenant, with the 80th Infantry Division, captured two German machinegun emplacements and led his platoon in further successful attacks in Neiderzerf, Germany. He was killed by a sniper’s bullet March 13, 1945, two days after his 23rd birthday, and was buried in a Goshen cemetery. Town council approved up to $300 for two signs recognizing Michael last June. Also during the meeting Monday, council approved an ordinance prohibiting sidewalk obstruction by people or parked vehicles, with temporary exceptions such as business sidewalk sales. And council heard that the wireless water meters purchased last month from Underground Pipe and Valve Inc. for $106,440 have been received and will be installed soon. Utilities Superintendent Randy Veach said the installers will have ID badges, so if residents have any problems they should check the IDs. Once the meters are installed, the town plans to begin billing for water monthly rather than every two months.
