Kosciusko YMCA Announces Spring Classes, Events

Posted
Kosciusko Community YMCA will start spring classes April 10.
Classes will run through May 28.
Classes for youth will include swim lessons, youth fitness and gymnastics classes for all ages. Swim lesson curriculum and levels are changing this session to be more focused on comfort and safety in the water before moving on to developing strokes.  These updates will improve the child's learning experience in the water, according to a news release from the YMCA.
Registration for spring classes is going on now for everyone.
Classes that promote healthy living will include group exercise and indoor group cycling, classes for older adults and water aerobics in both the warm water and lap pools. Adult classes are included with a Y membership.
In addition to classes, the Y is offering several events for all ages this spring; see the Welcome Center to sign up.
The Y will be offering free A1C screenings from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. These screenings will help determine if a person is pre-diabetic. If they are, the Y is offering the YMCA’s diabetes prevention class to keep it from advancing into diabetes. The class begins at 5:30 p.m. April 11.
For more information on the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, contact Stacy Thomas at sthomas@kcymca.org or 574-269-9622, Ext. 216.
Parkview Health also will offer free A1C tests in the Parkview Center for Healthy Living in the YMCA lobby from 6 to 9 a.m. May 9. For more information, contact Thomas.
CPR classes will be offered to the community 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 8 or 5:30 to 9 p.m. May 4.
If CPR certification is needed for a job or if someone wants to be more prepared to handle an emergency, they can sign up for this American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR class. The class will teach adult, child and infant CPR and AED use, but does not include first-aid. This three-hour class provides a two-year certification. There is a cost for participation and certification. For more information, contact Zane Gard at zgard@kcymca.org or 574-269-9622, Ext. 238.
To support those in the community going through cancer and their caregivers, the Y is hosting “Kathy’s Cancer Conversations,” a volunteer-led cancer support group meeting on the second Monday of each month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the Parkview Center for Healthy Living.  On April 10 the group will talk about Oral Cancer. On May 8, they’ll discuss nutrition for cancer survivors. For more information, contact Thomas.
The Y also will be starting another Livestrong® at the YMCA class April 11.  Livestrong® at the YMCA is an evidence-based program built on best practices for cancer survivor exercise.
The goals of the program are to empower adult cancer survivors to improve functional capacity and to increase their quality of life through an organized program of fitness and strength offered in a supportive, small-group setting. For more information on joining the program, contact Thomas.
A Co-Ed Adult Volleyball League will start April 10 on Monday nights with games starting between 6 and 9 p.m. Teams can be six to nine players with a maximum of four male players at a time. For more information, contact Gard.
The Y will be offering a Young Adult Bible Study for ages 18 to 35 that will discuss what God has to say to believers today, focusing on the book of 1 John. This group will meet in the chapel on Wednesdays, April 12 to May 24, 6 to 7 p.m. Contact Matt Goebel at mgoebel@kcymca.org or 574-269-9622, Ext. 235
For active older adults, the Y will be continuing Pickleball on Fridays, 1 to 3 p.m., starting again April 14. Pickleball is free to Y Members and open to everyone of all ages.
The YMCA is partnering with Crosswinds Counseling to offer a monthly seminar titled “Maximizing Your Marriage.”  These seminars will be interactive and educational and will include various assessments and exercises addressing the topic covered each month.
On April 19, Crosswinds will cover “Intimacy”- emotional verses physical, the value of communicating about intimacy and overcoming obstacles. On May 17, “Personality Differences” will be covered with a look at different types of personalities, a personality assessment and a discussion about how personality type affects relationships.
