Kosciusko Students Earn Lilly Scholarships

Posted

Three Kosciusko County-area high school students recently received full-ride scholarships to the Indiana colleges of their choice, thanks to Lilly Endowment Community Scholars.

Brent Lamb, of Wawasee High School; Matthew Metzger, of Whitko High School; and Kelsi Thompson, Warsaw Community High School, will receive full four-year scholarships as well as an $800 stipend for books and equipment.

All three students were selected through a "blind" process in which a committee reviewed their applications but did not have access to their names. They were selected based on their community service activities, academic achievement, extracurricular activities, work experience, essay response and letters of recommendation.

Lamb, the son of Bruce and Beth Lamb, plans to attend Purdue University and major in civil engineering.

He has worked with Habitat for Humanity, tutored a third-grade student and been involved in food and clothing drives for area organizations.

He also has worked on his family's farm and veterinary clinic, and his extracurricular activities have included student council, National Honor Society, choir, basketball, track and football.

Metzger is the son of David and Beth Metzger and plans to attend Bethel College and major in Christian ministries education.

His volunteer activities include a youth philanthropic organization, Toys for Tots drives, landscaping for his school, helping the elderly with lawn care and FFA.

He also worked on a farm, and his extracurricular activities included 4-H, band, student council, SADD, Drama Club, National Honor Society, Environthon, Academic Team, peer tutoring, peer counseling and the Youth Agriculture Exchange.

Thompson, the daughter of James and Patti Thompson, plans to study pre-medicine at the University of Notre Dame.

She has volunteered for the Boys and Girls Club, church day camp, soup kitchen, animal shelter, Our Father's House and at nursing homes.

Thompson worked at her family's ice cream business for three years, and her extracurricular activities included student council, National Honor Society, volleyball, softball, Mathletes, freshman mentor and School Improvement Board.

The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher education. Statewide, 366 scholarships were awarded.
