Kosciusko Solid Waste Management Board Discusses Budget

Posted

Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District Board reviewed the proposed 2027 budget at its meeting Tuesday.
KC Recycling Executive Director Tom Ganser presented a budget with higher expenses in nearly every category, as a result of recent inflation and oil prices.
In the budget, Ganser requested a 13% increase in marketing to tell the public about their events. Additionally, Ganser would like to use this funding to teach the community about how to safely handle and dispose of household hazards.
The budget for Household Hazardous Waste is to be lowered, from $95,000 to $84,500. This caused some confusion among board members, who asked why this would not need to be raised to allow for additional events.
Ganser explained the increased recycling services line item would include shredded documents and tires. HHW is for freon, electronics, paint and other materials similar to those.
The board unanimously approved the budget.
In other business:
• The next shred day will be 8-11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24.
• Tire week will be July 13-17. During the most recent tire week, the on-site container was filled completely. Tires must be clean, or they will not be accepted.
• Ganser told the board the June 2 landfill fire was believed to have been started by a lithium battery. These batteries can be extremely dangerous when they begin to swell. Lithium batteries are accepted for recycling at KC Recycling Depot, 220 S. Union St., Warsaw, for free.
• The board agreed they need to review their employee policies.
Board member Sue Ann Mitchell requested a copy be sent to the board for review and suggested Ganser review the current policy and highlight some potential changes at the next meeting.
• KC Recycling did educational programs with Cardinal Kids and Presby Preschool.
