Kosciusko REMC Sponsors A.C. Sparks Electric Safety Program

Posted
More than 1,000 fourth-grade students at 14 area schools in May became detectives on the case to uncover common electrical safety issues as part of an annual public safety program sponsored by Kosciusko REMC.

The program was presented by A.C. Sparks, the “electric detective” portrayed by Jerry Palma at such programs around Indiana for more than 20 years. The former educator and broadcast personality has developed the fun and informative presentation to help instruct children on the dangers of electricity, and teach electricity precautions and simple safety rules that may someday save a life or prevent a serious injury.

The program highlights such electricity safety tips as: always use the right watt-size light bulb; don’t put extension cords under carpets or furniture that may cause them to wear, don’t overload outlets; water and electrical appliances never mix; and be careful when working or flying kites around electrical lines. The program includes a variety of graphics and physical presentations.

In coordination with local schools, KREMC has sponsored the special safety program annually for more than 10 years.

“The A.C. Sparks presentations are an important part of our public safety and our school education program,” said Carol Ousley, KREMC energy advisor. “Jerry has a great talent for getting these messages across to the students.  Certainly a basic goal of the program is to promote electricity safety at this young age, but it is good to remember that these messages are important for everyone. We often have teachers or other adults who see the program come up afterward and say they learned something as well.”

Kosciusko REMC is a Touchstone Energy® electric cooperative serving more than 17,000 members throughout Kosciusko County and into surrounding counties.
