Kosciusko County Relay For Life is a month away, and teams and funds are still needed.

This year's relay is May 3-4. The relay will begin at noon May 3 with an opening ceremony, and end May 4 at 8 a.m. at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds.Proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society for cancer research.

There are 19 teams currently registered, and there were 24 teams registered last year.

There has been $7,000 raised so far this year, and this year's goal is to raise $75,000, according to Walk Chair Rick Enyart.

During last year's relay, $67,211 was raised.

Breast cancer survivor Jamie Lavy is this year's Kosciusko County Relay For Life walk honoree.

Lavy, 30, Roann, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006.

He has undergone cancer treatment and radiation at the Center of Hope Cancer Care at Kosciusko Community Hospital.

He is a service technician for Gosiger. Lavy is married to Sarah Lavy and they have a son, Stone.

This year's relay theme is "Toons Against Cancer." People will be able to decorate their sleeping sites in a cartoon character team.

There will be a ceremony where cancer survivors' and supporters' names are read.

New to this year is a fight back ceremony where people can write on a rock what they will do to overcome their personal battles with cancer to follow the "Toons Against Cancer" theme.

"It is hard to find a person who does not know a friend, co-worker or relative who has undergone cancer," Enyart said. "The goal of Relay For Life is to raise funds for cancer research to eradicate all forms of cancer."
