Indiana American Water announced today that it is awarding a $5,040 grant to Kosciusko Lakes and Streams as part of the company's 2011 Environmental Grant Program. Kosciusko Lakes and Streams will use the funds to incorporate water conservation education into existing programming and events already in place in Kosciusko County.
Established in 2005, the company's Environmental Grant Program offers funds for innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect the watersheds, surface water and/or groundwater supplies in the communities it serves.
“Kosciusko Lakes and Streams has taken a real leadership position to ensure the quality and quantity of one the area's most precious resources through a variety of programs and activities,” said Indiana American Water President Alan DeBoy. “It is our shared responsibility to protect our water supplies – and all our natural resources – to ensure safe and plentiful water supplies.”
The grant will be used to expand KLAS's existing field days for a K-12 education program and to incorporate hands-on interactive water conservation activities into the annual Northern Indiana Lakes Festival. The overall objective of the project is to educate the community about the importance of our water resources and to inspire them to take action to protect them now and in the future.
Kosciusko Lakes and Streams (KLAS) is a community water quality program centered at Grace College which is focused on its mission of protecting and enhancing local water quality by fostering grassroots ownership among the general population. Warsaw, the county seat for Kosciusko County, features more than 100 lakes.
All grant recipients will submit a report at the end of the year to American Water regarding how their grant was used to achieve their specific environmental goals.
