Kolberg Top Speller At County Bee

SYRACUSE - Holly Kolberg, a Milford School seventh-grader, will represent Kosciusko County at the area spelling bee in Fort Wayne.

Kolberg was named the county winner at the spelling bee finals Thursday at Wawasee Middle School. Kristin Allen is the county runner-up.

Kolberg took the championship in the bee's 24th round after Allen missed on "dewy." In a change from previous procedure, Kolberg was not asked to spell "dewy" but won after correctly spelling "foundling."

Thursday's match, in front of both girls' families and Allen's principal, Tom Ray, required the contestants to spell such words as "delay," "famine," "skeleton," "hare," "ragwort," "broil" and "paste."

Kolberg is the daughter of Doyle and Cynthia Kolberg, Syracuse. She will compete in the area spelling bee at the Anthis Career Center, Fort Wayne, March 12.

Allen's parents are Kraig and Dawn Allen, Warsaw. She will take Kolberg's place if Kolberg is unable to compete.

Thursday's judges were Jim Evans, Deb Blatz and Wendy Hite. Pronouncer was Tim Yeager, and Russ Mikel organized Thursday's bee.
