KLS membership drive starts this month

Kosciusko County residents who want to support literacy efforts in the area now have a chance - Kosciusko Literacy Services is starting a membership drive this month.

This week KLS will send out brochures that describe the services it offers.

"We want to let the people in the community know what we do, how we do it and how we pay for it," said Brenda Rigdon, executive director.

She said all KLS services are free - reading and ESL classes, books, testing and assessment and tutoring.

The organization is funded partially by United Way, and relies on several other sources for funding, Rigdon said. However, one of those sources, Indiana Literacy Foundation, recently had its funding reduced by the state Legislature.

KLS memberships run from $20 to $200, Rigdon said. In return, the member will receive quarterly newsletters and will be invited to all KLS programs, such as the community awareness breakfast, and special events, such as Cinco de Mayo.

"They also have the opportunity to help build better readers in the community," Rigdon said.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of Kosciusko Literacy Services should contact Rigdon at 267-5380.
