KLS Launches Read-Alike For Children To Learn About 1920s

Posted
Kosciusko Literacy Services invites parents and children to join the Read-Alike portion of The Big Read.

Age-appropriate book selections have been added to classrooms throughout Kosciusko County. The book selections are related to life in the Roaring Twenties, which is a major theme of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," the book selection for The Big Read.

Parents and children can have a shared reading experience and discuss what each learned about life during the 1920s. The book selections are: "Aunt Minnie McGranahan," "Aunt Minnie and the Twister," "The 1920s From Prohibition to Charles Lindbergh," "The 1920s Luck," "Only Yesterday" or "Daily Life in the United States." These books were purchased with a grant from The Dekko Foundation and Kosciusko County Community Foundation.

Each elementary classroom and middle school English classroom in the county received a new book.

The official launch of The Big Read is 6:30 p.m. March 19 at the Performing Arts Center at Warsaw Community High School. Dr. Elliot Engel will lecture on "The Rise and Fall of F. Scott Fitzgerald." The lecture is free.

Join The Big Read by reading "The Great Gatsby" and join a book discussion or a special event. Check the Web at www.kcread.org for more details.

This event is part of The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.
