KLAS Hosts Fall Field Day

Posted
Kosciusko Lakes and Streams hosted its biannual field day at Lucerne Park on Pike Lake Thursday.

Nearly 400 students learned about water quality and how to care for the lakes. Fourth-graders from local elementary schools, including Claypool, Leesburg, North Webster, Syracuse and Washington STEM Academy, as well as Sacred Heart School, got to fish, do water testing and experience the fun of being at a lake.

The KLAS field day provides hands-on learning that meets Indiana’s academic standards relating to the natural history of Indiana.

Grace College students studying to be teachers served as the instructors for the different stations set up for the kids.

“The field days provide a fun outdoor learning experience for the fourth-graders while providing our Grace students with valuable teaching experience,” said Anna Burke, KLAS program manager.

KLAS has been hosting field days since 2008. This event was made possible this year by sponsors Louis Dreyfus Commodities, The Papers, Warsaw Breakfast Optimist Club and Warsaw Parks and Recreation Department.

Kosciusko Lakes and Streams is a community-based research center at Grace College focused on applied research, educational outreach and advocacy that builds community capacity to promote, enjoy and properly steward Kosciusko County’s lakes and streams.
