KLA Class Learns About Aquatic Ecology

Posted
Kosciusko Leadership Academy met at the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation to learn about aquatic ecology in Kosciusko County.
Nathan Bosch, Ph.D., director of Kosciusko Lakes and Streams, shared there are 114 lakes in Kosciusko County including those with two or more acres.  There are 106 lakes of five or more acres in the county. Kosciusko County is home to both the largest natural lake in Indiana (Lake Wawasee) and the deepest lake in Indiana (Tippecanoe Lake). Ninety-seven of the lakes are named and can be found listed at water.grace.edu The lakes affect everyone in Kosciusko County and there is a need to protect these resources, he said.
Heather Harwood, executive director, Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation, spoke to the KLA cadets about WACF’s role in protecting the watershed.  Acquisitions of land for wetlands and lake front property have been made.
The WACF has completed ditch projects and accepted grant applications for funding. Diana Castell, volunteer educator for WACF, offers residents education on protecting the watershed.
The next KLA session will be Sept. 24 at the Otis R. Bowen Center, Warsaw, for “Understanding your Personality Preferences and Leadership Style.”
KLA is a not-for-profit organization devoted to serving Kosciusko County by encouraging leaders and future leaders to dream and create a better community through white paper projects.
