Kitson's Mistaken

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

In response to Harold Kitson's article on guns and Obama:

Harold, I know it's fun and challenging to use big scary words like un-American when you have overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Your letters are always sensationalist and make an entertaining read.

Also, don't use socialist if you don't know what it means, just cause you hear FOX News using the word, doesn't mean you should, too. None of Senator Obama's plans (if you actually read them) are "socialist," as I mentioned before. People like to use it as a scare word.

Oh, and if you're going to use facts and lists to make a point, I wish you would do some research. Facts are best used for an argument when you don't make them up or get them from a sensationalist right-wing Web site.

Here's Senator Obama's real stance on the gun issue:

From his Web site: "Millions of hunters and shooters own and use guns each year. Barack Obama believes the Second Amendment creates an individual right, and he respects the Constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms. He will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport and use guns."

Even the most basic of research would have returned this result.

So, let's see how many of the facts on your list can be shot down just from that statement:

1. Ban use of firearms for home defense. -Wrong.

2. Pass federal laws eliminating your right to carry. - Wrong.

3. Ban the manufactures, sale and possession of handguns. - Wrong.

4. Close down 90 percent of the gun shops in America. - Wrong.

5. Ban rifle ammunition commonly used for hunting and sport shooting. - Wrong.

6. Increase federal taxes on guns and ammunition by 500 percent. - I could go on, but as I was doing research on this issue, all I could find was this exact 10 point list printed on a variety of Web sites. So I guess instead of creating an educated argument of your own, Mr. Kitson, you took other peoples ideas and passed them off as you own. That's called plagiarism. It looks like you did do some research after all.

Sir, I am not trying to cram anyone down anyone's throat. I'm trying to rise above the crowd of lies and misconceptions that run rampant in this town. All I want is what's best for my family, your family and all the families in this town.

We are running out of jobs in this town, we are running out of places to work, and money to buy gas to look for more work. Everything is getting more expensive and many families are losing their homes.

John McCain has said that these things indicate that our economy is fundamentally sound, meaning he's not going to do anything to fix it. We need someone in office with the guts to say there is a problem and the history of knowing how to fix it. That's Obama this time. Next time, it may be a Republican, and if it is, I'll vote for him, too. Do what is best for your country first, then worry about yourself. That's not un-American, that's most-American.
