Mike Gavin, Kosciusko County Republican Party chairman, selected Joseph Kinch, 33, Claypool, as the new Jackson Township trustee.
Kinch replaces Donald Slater, who recently died. Kinch's term expires Jan. 1, 2007.
"I had a number of calls from people in the community who supported (Kinch)," Gavin said Friday morning of why he chose Kinch.
Kinch also acted as the interim Jackson Township trustee after Slater died.
The other candidate who applied for the trustee position was John Collins. Gavin said both candidates did well in their interviews and both were interested in serving the community both said they enjoy.
Kinch's appointment is effective immediately.
In a phone interview Friday afternoon, Kinch said he previously served as a clerk in the township. Slater had some goals set that Kinch and the township board knew about and they want to accomplish those before Kinch's term expires.
"If (the public) has any questions, they can call the office and we'll answer them as best as we can," said Kinch.
