INDIANAPOLIS — The IHSAA announced Tuesday that Tippecanoe Valley senior Barbie Kimmel will be one of 12 Indiana student-athletes to receive a C. Eugene Cato Memorial Scholarship Award. Kimmel and the other 11 recipients will receive a $2,500 scholarship during a banquet Thursday at the Red Roof Ballroom in downtown Indianapolis, as part of the Brady Sports Achievement Awards. Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano will serve as the keynote speaker for Thursday’s awards dinner. Kimmel has earned 10 varsity letters in gymnastics, swimming, and track and field during her time at Tippecanoe Valley High School. Top-ranked academically, she is a member of the Key Club and National Honor Society, while also he serving as a student council class representative and peer tutor during each of her four years at Tippecanoe Valley. Kimmel has volunteered as a youth gymnastics coach, served as a student assistant for her church youth group, attended summer church youth mission trips to Jamaica and contributed as a committee volunteer for the Red Cross Blood Drive. She is the daughter of Joseph and Cinda Kimmel. More than 100 applications were received from across the state and a blue ribbon panel of five individuals decided upon the final recipients. The scholarship program is named in tribute to the late former Commissioner C. Eugene Cato who led the IHSAA from 1983 to 1995 and also served as assistant commissioner from 1976 to 1983.
