Staff Report-
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Read Across Kosciusko County. Members of Kosciusko Endowment Youth Services, the Kosciusko County Community Foundation’s youth philanthropy group, encouraged literacy among 1,000 second-graders Thursday during Read Across Kosciusko County. KEYS students and adult volunteers traveled to elementary schools throughout Kosciusko and read to second-grade students. Each teacher was presented with new books for their classroom along with some surprises for their students. According to a press release from KCCF, 21 KEYS students and 16 volunteers went to 16 elementary schools. Fifty-one second-grade teachers brought more than 1,000 second-grade students to be read to in each school’s media center. The event correlates with a national reading event, “Read Across America,” which is held each March, the month of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. “Read Across Kosciusko County is a great way for KEYS students to practice their mission to impact education,” said KEYS Navigator Amy Cannon. “In addition to encouraging the vital skill of reading, this program helps KEYS members to be better grant makers as they interact with the students who are impacted by the educational grants they award.” KEYS students represent grades eight through 12, from four school corporations in Kosciusko County: Lakeland Christian Academy, Tippecanoe Valley, Warsaw and Wawasee. Their mission is “to work together to positively impact and improve education in our community by providing aid, now and for future generations.” For more information about KEYS, visit its webpage at www.kcfoundation.org/seekingfunds/educationgrants
