James Kennedy ran a gutty race to finish fifth at the NAIA National Championships.
Kennedy twisted his ankle in practice two days prior to the national meet, but still improved upon his 17th-place finish a year ago. Kennedy ran the 5-mile course in a fifth-place time of 24:19, just 14 seconds out of first place.
Winning the race was three-time defending champion Silah Misoi from Life University. Kennedy was only one second behind the fourth-place finisher.
Kennedy was also the only sophomore among the top 20 finishers. His finish earned him All-American honors. He is now a three-time NAIA All-American and a four-time NCCAA All-American.
