KCSWD Hosts Household Hazardous Waste Day

Posted

Household Hazardous Waste Day will be May 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Zimmer parking lot in Boggs Industrial Park.

The Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District will collect household hazardous wastes such as pesticides, chemical fertilizers, paint products, pool chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, cleansers, aerosols and batteries.

The KCSWMD is especially interested in collecting mercury-containing waste.

The danger with mercury is that it gets absorbed into the environment or the body and does not go away. It affects the central nervous system.

Ninety-nine percent of all fish sampled in Indiana have mercury in their tissue. In 1996, 481 cases were reported of mercury poisoning from thermometers.

Some examples of mercury-containing waste are old latex paint, clothes irons and curling irons with 15-minute shut-off, LA Gear shoes manufactured before 1997 with flashing lights in the soles, thermometers with silver bulbs, non-electric thermostats, and automotive headlights from Audi, Saab, Mercedes Benz, Lincoln Continental and Lexus.

The collection, only for residential waste, is free to all Kosciusko County residents.
