Kosciusko County detectives are warning citizens to be on the lookout for potential scams occurring in the county recently.
Detective John Hart advised that local citizens need to be aware that due to the economic recession, scam artists are capitalizing on individuals.
Hart said that one of the most recent incidents involves college-aged students, primarily females, which go door-to-door attempting to sell magazine subscriptions to gain "points" for themselves. The suspects allegedly are using the company name of "Miami Dream Team Inc." in Kittredge, Colo., which is apparently fictitious.
Local Kosciusko County citizens have been scammed on this crime with little possibility of restitution or arrest.
Hart also said that many local citizens are still being scammed by different sources using the well-known process of sending a large monetary check to the victim in exchange for them cashing it and keeping a substantial amount for themselves. The victim notoriously cashes the check into their bank account only to find later that it is fraudulent.Hart advised that these particular cases are virtually unsolvable from a law enforcement standpoint, but citizens continue to fall victim thinking that there is "free money" available.
Hart also stated that citizens should check out the business prior to ever conducting a transaction and suggested four possible locations that can be located on the internet: Federal Trade Commission, IC3/Internet Crime Complaint Center, Rip-off Report (www.repoffreport.com) and the Better Business Bureau.
