The public is invited to a piano recital by Borah Kang Wednesday in the Grace Village Chapel at 3 p.m. followed by a reception in the Grace Village dining room. Kang was born in South Korea and began studying piano at 3 years old. In 1991, Kang won the National Young Artist Piano Competition in Chun-An, South Korea, and then went on to win the second prize at the Chung-Nam National Student Music Competition in 1992. Additionally, Kang was invited by the Paeck-Chai Cultural Organization as a piano soloist in 1993. After entering the Daejeon Arts High School in 1994, she won the second prize in the National Student Music Competition presented by Mokwon University (1996), and was given a full performance scholarship to attend the university. While a student at the university, in addition to performing many public recitals, Kang had a master class with pianist Alexander Sviatski and was invited by the Young College Musician Association to be a soloist. Kang graduated from Mokwon University summa cum laude. Kang came to the U.S in 2003, and entered the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2004. During this time, she taught at the summer music festival, “International Institute for Young Musicians”, at Kansas University in Lawrence. When Kang received her master’s degree in music in 2006, she received the William Kurtzvan Piano Award and later in the same year was awarded the Sherrill Lambert Award at the MasterWorks Festival in Indiana. In 2006, Kang received a fellowship and began her doctoral degree program in piano performance at the University of Illinois where she is now an official doctoral candidate in piano performance.In 2007, Kang won the International Concerto Competition at the MasterWorks Festival in Winona Lake and performed with the Festival Symphony Orchestra. In the same year she was privileged to have master classes with the world-famous pianists Nelita True and Murray Perahia. She has also studied with Dr. Timothy Ehlen, Dr. Kenneth Drake, Dr. Daniel Shapiro and the late Mr. Joseph Plon. During the 2008-2009 academic year, Kang taught group classes in piano and theory as a teaching assistant at the University of Illinois School of Music. She has also served many churches as a church pianist and music director. In the past two years Kang has performed several times including a recital at the Lake View Musical Society in Chicago and Stateline Music Foundation in Freeport. She is currently active in solo and chamber music performances, accompanying, and teaching piano and music theory for the Piano Lab for Pre-College at the university.
