With the large number bodies of water located in Kosciusko County, the possibility of an emergency rescue is substantial. Recognizing this need, Jim Eads of the Mentone town marshal, submitted an application to K21 Health Foundation for funds to purchase 235 ResQ Discs for all first responder vehicles in the county.
The ResQ disc, which resembles a large Frisbee with 100 feet of rope attached, is thrown into the water in the direction of the victim. Victims can then grab the disc and be safely pulled to shore. The disc can be coiled to accommodate both right and left handed individuals. According to Eads, "The advantage of the ResQ disc is that the rescuer does not need to go into the water to attempt the rescue. The disc can easily be thrown from the shore. And if the victim misses the disc on the first attempt, it can be quickly retrieved and thrown again."
