Juvenile Shelter Seeks Increase In County Funds

Kosciusko County Council heard budget requests Thursday night from various agencies and groups that traditionally receive funding.

Among the groups were the Kosciusko County Juvenile Shelter, which is now overseen by the Bowen Center after closing briefly earlier this year because of various problems.

The center serves youth who have been abused or are in need of immediate emergency shelter, and offers services to surrounding counties.

However, the number of counties seeking to use the services has declined this year.

Bowen Center Director Kurt Carlson told the council Thursday that the number of local youths served has increased and that the center has been able to re-establish the facility after re-opening it in mid-March.

The Bowen Center is seeking $60,000 for next year. Last year, the shelter received $35,000 from the county.

Council listened to Carlson's proposal, but did not make any decisions.

Final budget decisions on the shelter and other requests will be determined during budget hearings that begin Aug. 17.

Another request came from Cardinal Center, which is seeking an additional $7,000 because of transportation needs.

Center Director Jane Greene said the additional request is not something they will need year after year.

Cardinal relies on Kosciusko Area Bus Service for much of its transportation. KABS is also seeking additional money from the city of Warsaw because of funding cuts.

Other agencies making cuts were the Convention and Visitor's Bureau, the Fair Association, Home Health Care, the Historical Society, Beaman Home and Kosciusko Development Inc.
