MONROE, Ga. – Justin Truman Long, 94, of Monroe, Ga., went to be with his Savior on Sept. 2, 2013. He was born Dec. 31, 1918, in Green Township, Marshall County, to Jacob Truman and Eloise Irwin Long. He was married to his beloved wife, Lillian Crawford Long of Elbert County, Ga., who preceded him in death. He graduated valedictorian from Mentone High School in 1937, received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University in 1941, and his doctorate from Iowa State University in 1950. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. He worked as a professor at Auburn University from 1949 to 1953. He worked from 1953 to 1988 as a research chemical engineer for the Atomic Energy Commission and Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and he was a member of several scientific societies. His most notable professional achievement was authoring and editing the 1,000-page college textbook “Engineering for Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing.” His personal achievements were far more important, most notably being a faithful servant of Jesus Christ for more than 80 years, being faithfully married for almost 60 years, and being the dearly loved patriarch of a family that exceeds 100 members. He was a keen bird-watcher, astronomer and creationist. He was a classical music enthusiast, and in his retirement years he enjoyed being “proprietor” of the Hubbard Street Bird Sanctuary and the Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary (his backyards). He is remembered by many people for being an outstanding Bible teacher, and he served enthusiastically with Gideons International for many years. He is survived by his 11 children: Justin Truman (and spouse Penny) Long, Faith (and spouse Phil) Bausch, Dr. Ben (and spouse Connie) Long, Lois Ann Long, Carol (and spouse Phil) Gruber, David Long, Daniel (and spouse Linda) Long, James (and spouse Denise) Long, Jonathan (and spouse Kathy) Long, Dottie (and spouse Conrad) Smith, and Debbie (and spouse Mark) Spicer: 33 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Lilja, Rockford, Ill.; a brother, Dr. Malcolm Long, Indianapolis; sisters-in-law, Kathryn Greenway and Jenelle Worthington; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery, Elberton, Ga.
