Maj. Friedrich Josellis, one of the two U.S. Army Junior ROTC instructors at Warsaw Community High School, will be sporting a unique haircut for the next two days. The program recently did a fundraiser with Carson’s to raise money for its military ball, according to Sgt. Major Mark Whitford. The JROTC cadets were given a challenge that whoever sold the most coupon books got to shave Josellis’s head any way they wanted. “He has to wear it for two days,” Whitford said. Cadet senior Dennis Carlson sold the most. He said it took him a couple of weeks, but he sold 39 books. Carlson is no stranger to shaving heads as he shaves his own. After high school, Carlson also plans to go into the Army, where shaving one’s own head will come in handy. Josellis said the Carson’s fundraiser raised about $1,800 for the program. It was the program’s first fundraiser. Whitford said that since the Army doesn’t send a lot of money to the JROTC program because of cutbacks, Warsaw has to have its own fundraisers. The money will not only pay for the military ball, but also anything else the program needs like rifle team supplies or special items for uniforms. The military ball will be March 29 at Champagne Jam. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., with the receiving line starting at 6 p.m. Anyone who wants to donate to the JROTC program can send it to WCHS and write “for JROTC” in the memo line. “Any funds are welcome,” Josellis said. Whitford also reported the WCHS JROTC program also has appointed its first battalion commander – senior Makayla Leamon. “It was kind of shocking because there’s a lot of people to choose from and they picked me,” she said. “It’s a real big honor.” She reported her duties included overseeing most of the program’s activities. She has to make sure everyone has jobs to do and they get them done. The JROTC program is in its first year at WCHS.
