Joyce Snyder McFadden

NORTH MANCHESTER – Joyce Snyder McFadden died Sept. 21, 2011, at Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester, where she lived for nearly eight years. She was surrounded by family and friends during a short illness.

She was born Jan. 3, 1931, in Marshall County, to Charles and Lottie Snyder. On June 7, 1953, in Plymouth, she married Wilbur McFadden, who survives.

After graduating from Manchester College in 1953, she lived in Illinois and Michigan while Wilbur completed his medical training. They served together as missionaries in Indonesia during the 1960s, lived briefly in Puerto Rico and California and moved to North Manchester in 1969. She taught elementary school in California. She earned a master’s degree in counseling from the University of St. Francis with a specialization in addiction and recovery. She and her husband developed a special interest in smoking cessation and helped found the Addiction Care Center, Wabash, where she served as an addictions counselor. Her recovery, the fellowship she found in Alcoholics Anonymous and her generosity with those needing support, were a central part of her life.

Also surviving are three sons: Dan (and spouse Wendy), Elgin, Ill.; Dave (and spouse Renee), North Manchester; and Tim (and spouse Rosanna), Goshen; a  daughter, Joy, Goshen; a sister, Janice Burroughs, Fort Wayne; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at Manchester Church of the Brethren.
