SOUTH WHITLEY - John W. Whitt, 71, of South Whitley, died at 7:27 a.m. Jan. 14, 2011, in his residence.

He was born Oct. 5, 1939, in Prestonsburg, Ky., to Cecil and Rhoda Elliott Whitt. On July 28, 1962, he married Janice C. Darley, who survives.

He attended Prestonsburg High School and served in the Kentucky National Guard. He spent his work career in the construction trade with D&C Construction, South Whitley. He was a member of South Whitley United Methodist Church and South Whitley Lions Club.

Also surviving are two sons, Michael Whitt, South Whitley, and Marvin (and spouse Sherry) Whitt, Huntington; a daughter, Amy (and spouse Trent) Szelis, Huntington; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three half brothers, Elbert Sammons, Warsaw, and Eddie and Columbus Sammons, both of Prestonsburg; and two half sisters, Ottie Rice, Prestonsburg, and Joyce Tussey, David, Ky. He was preceded in death by a brother, a sister and a granddaughter.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at South Whitley United Methodist Church. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.
