John W. Caster, 88, of Westminster Village, Muncie, died at noon Oct. 10, 2009, in Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie.
He was born July 20, 1921, in Delaware County, to Lawrence Edgar and Florence Bullock Caster. On Sept. 25, 1941, in Richmond, he married Betty Lee Stover, who died June 3, 2007.
He formerly lived in North Webster; Court of Colfax, Warsaw; and Grace Village, Winona Lake. He was former owner of Barbee Hardware Store, North Webster, for 25 years, and Caster Crafts Woodworking Products. He also was a corporate pilot for Zimmer Inc., Warsaw. He held his private pilot's license since 1957. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 253, North Webster, and Cromwell Lodge F&AM 705 and a member of The Fort Wayne Valley Scottish Rite. He also faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II from 1941-45, as an Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class.
Surviving are three nephews: Rodney (and spouse Darlene) Phillips, Muncie; Tom (and spouse Jean) Meeks, San Francisco, Calif.; and Jay Phillips, Port St. John, Fla.; and two nieces, Joyce (and spouse Eugene) Tapy, Albany, and Roseanne Negele, Boston, Mass. He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastor Charlotte Vermyer officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with military honors by members of North Webster American Legion Post 253.
