John Leslie Vogel, 89, went to meet his maker June 1, 2016, at his daughter’s home in St. Augustine, Fla. He was born Nov. 8, 1926, in Louisville, Ky. In 1951 in Durham, N.C., he married Tam Latty, who survives. They were married 65 years. He left the city at age 17 to matriculate at Duke University where he became a member of several honorary clubs including Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to graduate from Duke Medical School in 1950. They lived in Atlanta where he interned at Grady Hospital and then took residency training in internal medicine at Emory University, Atlanta. In 1955 they moved to northern Indiana where he joined a clinic in practiced medicine for 33 years. After retiring he and his wife traveled extensively in western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He enjoyed skiing in Colorado, Utah and Austria, backpacking trails in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He also was an avid canoeist, running the rivers of Michigan and Wisconsin. He also enjoyed and supported classical music, the Civic Theatre and the Civic Ballet. Also surviving are a daughter, Jana (and Lesley); three grandchildren: Luke, Hayden, Jansen; and a great-grandchild, Kaya. His ashes will be taken to northern Indiana where there will be a celebration of a life well lived. Craig Funeral Home is assisting the family.
