NAPPANEE - John Jr. Phillips, 90, of Sweetser, formerly of Nappanee, died unexpectedly at 5:48 p.m. May 14, 2009, in Marion General Hospital.
He was born Sept. 17, 1918, in Nappanee, to Henry M. and Cora Frenger Phillips. On Aug. 16, 1946, in Holiday, Mo., he married Mary Curtright, who preceded him in death July 12, 2006.
He grew up in Nappanee, and served in the Army Air Corp. stationed in Africa. He lived in Woodstock, Ill., then moved back to Nappanee where he lived until moving to Sweetser. He graduated from Nappanee High School and was a salesman for Nappanee Milling Company for many years then Brown Vylactos. He was a World War II veteran, serving the Army Air Corp. He was a member of Nappanee United Methodist Church, Nappanee Masonic Lodge, and Nappanee American Legion.
Surviving are a daughter, Colleen (and spouse Greg) Reece, Noblesville; a son, Steve (and spouse Joanna Guckenberger) Phillips, Nappanee; and four grandsons. He was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee, with Rev. David Harrold officiating. Special masonic services will precede the funeral service and military graveside services will be by the Nappanee American Legion.
