John Anthony SlatteryJohn Anthony Slattery, 72, Rochester, died at 5:45 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27, 2021, at Courtyard Healthcare Center in Goshen.
He was born on Feb. 14, 1949, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Virginia Patricia Buckley Slattery and John Francis Slattery. John was married to Diane Hurban in May of 1973. She died in January of 1987. He married Kathleen “Kathy” O’Connell on May 6, 1989, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Warsaw.
John enlisted on Sept. 22, 1967, and proudly served in the U.S. Army. He served alongside his fellow soldiers for two tours in Vietnam and was honorably discharged as a sergeant on April 29, 1970.
John’s life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian burial that will be conducted on Friday, Sept. 3 at 4 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 125 N. Harrison St., Warsaw, celebrated by Father Jonathan Norton. John will be laid to rest with his family at Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, N.Y.
Friends and family are invited to visit prior to the service from noon to 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, Warsaw. Military rites will be conducted at the end of visitation at 3 p.m. by the American Legion Post #49, V.F.W. #1126, both of Warsaw, and active-duty members of the Army Honor Guard.
