BOURBON - Joe E. Shively, 65, passed away June 20, 2010, in Jacksonville, Fla., after a courageous 10-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born March 3, 1945, in Plymouth, to Russell and Geneva Shively. His wife of 47 years, Linda Kay Davis Shively, survives.
He lived his younger years in northern Indiana where he attended Purdue University. He received a bachelor's degree in 1967; a master's degree in 1968; and a Phd in 1970. He took his first position in Carbondale, Ill., with an educational research laboratory in 1970, then moving to Charleston, W.Va., working for AEL in 1973. He moved to Midlothian, Va., in 1986, while working for McGraw-Hill. After moving to Jacksonville, Fla., in 1994, he worked for the state of Florida in the vital statistics department.
He belonged to many organizations over the years including being a Kentucky Colonel, an honorary Lieutenant Colonel Aide-de-Camp in the Alabama State Militia, a Civitan Club Civitan of the year and fraternal member of Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi.
Also surviving are a son, Mark (and spouse Lynn) Shively, Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Brenda (and spouse Greg) Hadley, Fairfax, Va.; grandchildren: Samantha, Sarah, Kyle, Taylor and Matthew; three sisters: Eleanor (and spouse Glenn) Deaton, Columbus, Ind.; Nancy (and spouse Larry) McPherron, Plymouth; and Sally (and spouse Ernie) Heighway, Fountain City; and a brother, Dale (and spouse Doris) Shively, Nappanee.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St., Bourbon. Burial will be in Stony Point Cemetery, north of Atwood.
