SYRACUSE - Jessica Lauren Ruiz, 19, of Cromwell, died at 5:42 p.m. July 4, 2008, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on East Wawasee Drive, Syracuse.
She was born Feb. 23, 1989, in Chicago, Ill., to Martin and Victoria Siwinski Ruiz.
Moving to this area in 1998, she was a student at Indiana University, Bloomington, where she was a pre-med student studying to become a pediatrician. She graduated with honors from Wawasee High School in 2007. She recently was inducted into the Phi Sigma Theda National Honor Society, was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, played piccolo in the I.U. Marching 100 and was a Hudson and Hollard Merit Scholar.
Surviving are her mother and stepfather, Victoria and Lanny Hays, Cromwell; her father and stepmother, Martin and Mary Ruiz, Hickory Hills, Ill.; a brother, Jonathon Ruiz, Cromwell; and grandparents, Theodosia Siwinski, Cromwell, and Kathleen and Nacho Melendez, Phoenix, Ariz. She was preceded in death by a grandfather.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church, Syracuse, with Pastor Richard Dunning officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.
Calling is from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse.
