Jersey Ceremony Held For Warsaw's MevisAndrew Mevis is going to ring in the new year in exciting fashion.
Mevis, the standout kicker and punter for the Warsaw Tigers, has been selected to participate in the Under Armour All-American Game on Jan. 1 in Orlando, Fla.
On Thursday at the Performing Arts Center at WCHS, Mevis was presented his jersey in front of his Warsaw teammates, family and school officials.
“I’m excited to play in this game,” said Mevis. “It’s a dream come true to play in a national all-star game like this.”
Mevis, who also played soccer for the Tigers, is ranked eighth in the nation as a place kicker and 11th as a punter by Kohl’s Kicking.
During the 2016 season, Mevis made 43 of 45 extra-point attempts and 9 of 12 field goal attempts, including a 51-yarder against Concord on Oct. 14 that tied the school record.
In 68 kickoffs this fall, Mevis had 58 touchbacks, including multiple times where he booted the ball through the uprights.
Mevis’ 51-yard field goal tied the school record set by Jake Rogers in 2005. Rogers went on to kick for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats and in the National Football League.
Mevis, who barely missed a 54-yard field goal in the game against Concord, tied the single-season school record for field goals with nine, joining Rogers in 2005 and Caleb Klusman in 2014.
“When anybody is awarded at a level like this, there’s a feeling of pride that goes through the school and the community. We’re very proud of Andrew,” said WCHS Principal Troy Akers, who was the head coach of the Tigers when Rogers was a kicker.
“When you look at Andrew’s situation, there’s a lot of God-given talent, but I can’t think of anybody who has worked any harder to improve his skill. I see a lot of similarities in Jake and Andrew. When the door opened for Jake to kick at the next level, he broke it down. Now Andrew has established himself as one of the best in the nation. That, along with his high academic standard and his character, makes him a great choice for college coaches looking at him.”
Thursday’s ceremony ended with Warsaw special teams coach Cole Richards being presented the American Family Insurance Dream Champion Award for his influence on Mevis’ career.
