Jefferson’s First Lego League Celebrates 1st Semester Success

Posted
Jefferson’s First LEGO League had a busy first semester.

This year, the group’s theme was space travel and students were asked to research a problem with space travel and then design a possible solution to that problem.

Students created three presentations over the course of the semester, according to a news release from Warsaw Community Schools. The first project asked students to highlight the problem they chose to address and present a viable solution. Their next presentation asked students to showcase LEGO’s core values. The last presentation asked children in the league to describe robotics coding and engineering they had done on the LEGO EV2 robot that works to complete missions on mission model board.

Outside of the classroom, students in FLL exceled at competitions, the release states. At the regional level, students won the robot design award and placed second out of 14 teams, qualifying the team for state.

Other WCS schools that competed included Washington STEM Academy, Harrison Elementary and Lincoln Elementary.

At the state competition, Jefferson finished 33 out of 48 teams in the robotics competition. The team had a solid showing in the project, core values and robot design presentations.

Jefferson’s First LEGO League is sponsored by Shawn Longenberger, Jefferson fourth-grade teacher; Jennifer Long, Jefferson sixth-grade; and Patrick Hazelton, WCS STEM instructional coach.
