Jean Ellon SturgillJean Ellon Sturgill, of Warsaw, and affectionately known by her family and friends as “Mean Jean,” passed away at 7:20 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 25, 2022, at Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation in South Bend at the age of 75.
She was born on Feb. 28, 1947, in Vicco, Ky., to Sinia Faye Adams Hatcher and Clarence Hatcher. She moved to Warsaw, Indiana from Kentucky when her family moved to the area and she spent the last 55 years in Kosciusko County. Jean was a hard-working lady her entire life. She worked for a number of years at Fibre Form in Columbia City and later worked at Sun Metal and Big-R as the housewares manager in Warsaw. Jean loved nature and spending time outdoors fishing and camping. Most of all she loved her family and she will be dearly missed.
She leaves behind her son, John (Christine) Sturgill, South Bend; daughter, Sonia Sturgill, Warsaw; four grandchildren: Christopher, Emma, Matthew and Dylan; and four great-grandchildren: Delaney, Isley, Amari and Addelyn. Also surviving are three sisters: Jacqueline Hatcher, Leesburg; Kathleen (Gary) Kilbourne, Pierceton; Vicki (Curtis) Holle, Bloomington; five brothers: Larry (Connie) Hatcher, Pierceton; James (Ann) Hatcher, Leesburg; Rick (Ginny) Hatcher, Warsaw; Nick (Connie J.) Hatcher, Warsaw; and Steven Timothy Hatcher, Warsaw. She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Hatcher on Oct. 20, 2013; mother, Sinia Faye Hatcher on Dec. 15, 2010; and her brother, Darrell Wayne Hatcher on Feb. 1, 2015.
Jean’s life will be celebrated with a service at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec, 1 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, and officiated by Pastor Glen Hughes. She will be laid to rest at a later date at Oswego Cemetery, Oswego. Friends and family may visit an hour prior to the service from 3 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
