NORTH MANCHESTER - Jean E. Brown, 93, of North Manchester, and formerly of Converse, died at 10 p.m. Nov. 8, 2008, in Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester.

She was born Feb. 22, 1915, in Stockton, Ill., to Avery and Sadie Ellen Lutz Stouffer. On June 26, 1938, she married Leicester H. Brown, who died Aug. 17, 2002.

She taught business and music at Pearl City (Ill.) High School from 1937-38, and Deedsville from 1938-42, and co-owned Brown's Hatchery, Converse, from 1942-1978. She was a member of North Manchester United Methodist Church and a member and past president of Pierian Club and Department Club, both in Converse. While in Converse, she was a member of Richland United Methodist Church, where she served as organist and choir director for 25 years. She graduated from Lena (Ill.) High School in 1932, and received a bachelor's degree from Manchester College in 1937.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda (and spouse Roy) Chapman, Naples, Fla.; a sister, Evelyn (and spouse Paul) Bowman, Lenexa, Kan.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son and two brothers.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Timbercrest Chapel, North Manchester, with Pastor Larry Ray officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Gardens of Memory, Marion.

Calling is from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Timbercrest Chapel.
