James R. Smith, 89, of Warsaw,  passed away at 10:30 a.m. March 5, 2013, in Health Park Lee Memorial Hospital, Fort Myers, Fla.
He was born Aug. 14, 1923, in Hobart, to Rex E. and Jennie Huffer Smith. On June 22, 1947, in Warsaw, he married Mary Lou Eherenman, who survives.
A lifetime resident of Warsaw, he served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-45 in the European Theater. He served in the 12 Armored Division with Troop A 92nd Calvary Recon Squadron, receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
He was shop supervisor for Union Tool Co., for 36 years. He was a member of Warsaw Community Church and Disabled American Veterans and a lifetime member of American Legion Post  49 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1126, Warsaw.
Also surviving are three daughters, Sandra (and spouse Bill) Volk, Urbana, Ill., and Sharon Carey and Susan (and spouse Rick) Weed, all of Warsaw; 11 grandchildren: Anne (and spouse Brook) Johnson; Adam (and spouse Emily) Volk; Nathan (and spouse Torrie) Carey; Amy (and spouse Jed) Trefren; J.D. (and spouse Callie) Carey; Caleb Carey; Mark Carey; Amanda (and spouse Daniel) Moore; Angie (and spouse Brandon) Schmitt; Sarah (and spouse Scott) Stinson; and Ashley (and spouse Preston) Singleton; and 19  great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Nicholas, Levi and Alissa Carey and sisters, Marybelle Funnell, Frances Blackford and Audrey Decker.
Service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastors Bryan Koorey, Scott Turskey and Jeff Pfeifer and the Rev.  Paul Tinkel officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with military honors by members of  American Legion Post 9 and VFW Post 1126, Warsaw.
Calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
