SYRACUSE – James E. “Jim” Hershberger, 96, of Syracuse, died at 4:35 p.m. March 24, 2013, in his Dewart Lake residence. He was born Oct. 8, 1916, in Bremen, to Clement Conrad and Harriet Etta Schlosser Hershberger. On Jan. 1, 1939, in Plymouth, he married Mildred Beyler, who died June 1958. On Feb. 12, 1959, in Bremen, he married Elva C. Haney Huff, who died Feb. 16, 2012. He graduated from Bremen High School and attended Purdue University, West Lafayette. He was a farmer in Bremen for many years; formerly sold Funks G. Hybrid Corn; was a salesman at Smiley Pole Buildings, Denver; and worked for Borkholder Buildings, Nappanee, for several years. He moved to Syracuse (Dewart Lake) from Bremen in 1964. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse, where he was part of the Questers class. He was a former member and attended Grace United Methodist Church, Bremen. Surviving are two daughters, Lois Lindenfeld, Raleigh, N.C., and Sherry (and spouse Bill) Newcum, Syracuse; a son, Phil (and spouse Gwen) Hershberger, Bremen; a stepdaughter, Donna (and spouse Steve) Wagner, Elkhart; a stepson, Keith (and spouse Janice) Huff, Marion; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by a son. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with Pastor David Herr officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bremen Cemetery.
